My Chicken Pox Story

By Mitchell Ozog

I t is unbelievable to experience chicken pox at age of 21. Unfortunately our life is full of surprises and circumstances occur when we do not expect them at all. However, if I did not visit my fiancée at hospital where she worked as a nurse, perhaps, I would be protected from chicken pox. This experience caused me discomfort and unnecessary stress. Obviously, I learned my lesson.

I woke up early in a morning on April 9, 1981. I was not able to sleep anymore. My wedding was schedule 10 days later. I was so excited. I opened my bedroom window. The day sounded so promising. I could feel it at the air. Warm rays of the morning sun tickled my nose and birds already sang cheerfully their favorite tune. I thought, that was a perfect day to visit my fiancée.

My fiancée Krystyna worked at the children’s hospital, in neurological section. When I arrived there she gave me surprising look but she seemed to be excited to see me. She introduced me to her colleagues and then proposed that we could meet some of her little patients. Although, I thought it was a good idea, I did not realize that was the chicken pox epidemic there and Krystyna did not warm on it assuming that I experienced it early in my childhood. Although, I had contact with Krystyna’s patients for no longer than 20 minutes, there was long enough for me to be infected by chicken pox. I became ill in five days.

That afternoon my future wife and I decided to visit her grandmother who lived in a country. It was her 63 birthday. She was the greatest hostess and the best cook ever. There was a pleasure to be in her company and it seemed to me that majority of her guests enjoyed being there. She served us a dinner inside and invited us to eat some desert in her incredibly, huge and charming yard.

We located ourselves on a bench, under enormous and incredibly beautiful willow tree. Its smooth branched were touching lazily a ground. Willow tree was our favorite kind of tree, which always protected us fro sun or rain. Also, it was our secret place to hide. There was a lady sitting next to us, someone from Krystyna’s family, who stared at my nose occasionally, and especially paying attention to a top of it. I decided to visit a man’s room to discover what was that interesting regarding my appearance. So I got there, thinking that my nose was dirty, and instead  I noticed two huge and red spots  occupying my nose. I still did not realize what they were. I thought it was allergies, unfortunately when I woke up next morning, I discovered more spots of various size which turned into itchy blisters, several hours later.

I have never been that sick in my life. I experienced high fever and sore throat, and my body was that weak that I could not even move a muscle? However, the biggest problem was that I was about to get married and I felt like my life was over. I was angry with myself but I would not give up. I took a good care of myself. I used a special white, cream to cover my blisters and other spots. I had antibiotic to get rid of my fever and sore throat and some vitamins to make my body stronger. Fortunately, I felt much better two days later. My blisters started to heal and even some of them disappeared from my face, and that was what I worried about the most, my face. There were only some little spots, which were not that, visible and my doctor told me that stage of my illness was not contingent anymore; therefore I could precede my wedding plans.

My chicken pox story survived until today and is being retold on many occasions. I t became a ritual .We all laugh about it when we meet with our family or friends. Although, this is my very personal story, I believe that it is a very important story for people to know because it can occur to anyone, especially if they did not experience it in their early childhood. I strongly advice them not to go hospital or any related places to it, if there is no reason for it. You never known what might happen there, and remember that hospital is not an appropriate place for dating; there are much romantic places where you can spend some time with your future wives or husbands such as a park or a cozy restaurant for instant.
